Land Holding Pattern and Horticulture Prospects, Javvadhu Hills

📍 Javvadhu Hills, Tamil Nadu ⏳ Duration: 11 Months 🤝 State Planning Commission, Tamil Nadu

Project Overview

Hope Ever Foundation conducted a comprehensive socio-economic and livelihood assessment among the Malayali Scheduled Tribes in the Javvadhu Hills. The study primarily focused on understanding the prevailing landholding patterns, agricultural practices, and the scope for horticultural development in this hilly terrain.

Special emphasis was placed on identifying opportunities that could enhance the income levels of tribal households through crop diversification and value addition in horticultural produce.

The assessment included consultations with farmers, traditional leaders, and local institutions to capture indigenous knowledge while analyzing the constraints faced in market access and productivity.

Market intelligence studies were carried out to understand price fluctuations, demand trends, and potential buyers for horticultural commodities such as jackfruit, tamarind, and millets.

Recommendations were made for strengthening value chains, creating aggregation models, and establishing processing facilities that would help communities gain better bargaining power.

The project also explored the role of infrastructure development such as cold storage, transport facilities, and irrigation systems in boosting horticultural productivity and reducing post-harvest losses.

By combining field insights with policy-level recommendations, the assessment served as a roadmap for promoting sustainable horticultural livelihoods among the Malayali tribes.
